In April 2022, the Kano State High Court sentenced Bala to 24 years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to 18 charges related to blasphemy and incitement stemming from his social media posts.

Reflecting on his time in prison, Bala revealed the numerous challenges he faced, including harassment from fellow inmates, inadequate healthcare, and being compelled to participate in religious practices against his will.

“I continue to face threats and a lack of understanding from some individuals because of my views on atheism,” Bala said after his release.

Human rights organizations have welcomed his freedom, describing it as a significant step toward protecting freedom of expression in Nigeria.

Bala urged the government to safeguard freedom of expression for all citizens, regardless of their religious or non-religious beliefs. He also called on religious adherents to foster understanding with non-religious individuals to promote peace and coexistence in society.
