The Kano State House of Assembly has strongly criticized Bayero University Kano (BUK) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, over his remarks on the demolition of structures in Rimin Zakara, Ungogo LGA.

Lawmakers expressed outrage after Abbas declared that the university would not hesitate to carry out the demolitions, despite the loss of lives and injuries recorded during the operation.

The controversy began when demolition teams, backed by security forces, moved into Rimin Zakara late at night to bring down residential buildings allegedly constructed on land belonging to BUK.

According to eyewitnesses, the operation, which targeted over 50 structures, escalated into a violent clash between residents and security personnel. Many residents, believing they had legal claims to the land, resisted the demolition. The confrontation turned deadly when security operatives opened fire, killing four people and leaving several others injured.

Amid the growing tension, Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo, the lawmaker representing Ungogo LGA, raised a motion urging the Assembly to intervene and put an end to the demolitions. He condemned BUK’s actions, arguing that they not only disregarded legal provisions but also lacked empathy for the affected families.

Ungogo emphasized that such forceful evictions violated human dignity and international legal standards.

In response, the Assembly has taken steps to investigate the circumstances surrounding the demolition. Lawmakers directed their national committee to collaborate with the Kano State Government’s investigative team to uncover the truth behind the incident.

Additionally, they urged the state government to probe officials who assisted BUK in executing the demolition.
