The Kano State House of Assembly has rejected the tax reform bills currently under consideration in the National Assembly, citing potential negative impacts on the northern region.

The decision came during a plenary session on Monday, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Ismail Jibrin Falgore.

Majority Leader Lawan Husseini, representing Dala Constituency, introduced the motion and called on northern lawmakers and the conference of speakers to oppose the bills.

Husseini described the reforms as a “calculated plan to sabotage the economy” of the northern region, warning that they would increase hardship. He expressed particular concern over the proposed allocation of Value Added Tax (VAT), arguing that states like Lagos would benefit disproportionately due to their concentration of major companies and institutions.

“This bill will further weaken northern states, many of which may struggle to pay salaries and face growing poverty,” Husseini said.

Backing the motion, Salisu Mohammed of Doguwa Constituency urged the Senate to prioritize pressing issues such as insecurity and unemployment rather than fast-tracking the tax reform. Murtala Kadage of Garko Constituency echoed calls for northern unity to block the bill.

Following extensive deliberations, the assembly resolved to appeal to northern members of the Senate, House of Representatives, and the conference of speakers to act decisively in preventing the bill’s passage.
