The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has withdrawn the earlier invitation issued to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II over the recent Sallah Durbar incident in Kano.

This was disclosed in a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who explained that the police chief directed the Kano State Command to obtain the Emir’s statement within the state. The move, according to Adejobi, followed interventions by key stakeholders.

He added that the decision was made to avoid any form of politicization or misinterpretation of the police’s actions, in line with the IGP’s commitment to fairness and professionalism.

The invitation was initially part of a broader investigation into violent disruptions that occurred during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. Despite a state government order banning durbar processions for security reasons, Emir Sanusi was said to have led the traditional event, drawing massive crowds. This reportedly heightened tensions and contributed to the unrest.

During the dispersal from the Eid prayer ground, a group of individuals, including Usman Sagiru who is now in police custody allegedly attacked and fatally stabbed Surajo Rabiu, a vigilante from Sabon Titi Jaba Quarters. Another vigilante, Aminu Suleman from Kofar Mata Quarters, was also injured. Both victims were reportedly part of the Emir’s security detail at the time of the attack.

The police command has launched a full investigation into the incident and invited the Shamakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Isyaku, for questioning.

Authorities say the ongoing investigation is aimed at uncovering the root causes of the violence and ensuring accountability.
