The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has transferred Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Usaini Gumel to the Community Policing, Research, and Planning department for allegedly criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara.

Gumel allegedly described both actions as unconstitutional during an informal discussion with colleagues in his office. However, one of those present reportedly leaked the conversation to the IGP, prompting Gumel’s immediate transfer.

Sources said the senior officer was not given a chance to explain or defend himself before the decision was made.

Gumel, who began duties as AIG in charge of Zone 7, Abuja, on February 19, has been replaced by AIG Mobolaji Victor Olaiya.

On March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to escalating political instability and incidents of pipeline vandalism.

The declaration led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all state lawmakers for an initial period of six months. Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas was appointed as the administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during this time.
