A newlywed man, Usman Ali, has dragged his wife, Maryam, before a Sharia Court in Kano over the alleged theft of three mobile phones worth N65,000.

Usman told the court that Maryam disappeared from their matrimonial home in Abuja and returned to her parents’ house in Kano with the missing devices. He alleged that his wife left without notice and accused her of stealing the phones before fleeing.

However, Maryam denied the allegations, claiming she left her husband due to repeated physical abuse. She told the court that she could no longer endure the beatings and had to seek safety with her family in Kano.

In addition to the theft claim, Usman also accused three of Maryam’s friends of being a bad influence on her and encouraging what he described as inappropriate behavior.

Presiding over the matter, Judge Ustaz Rabiu Yahaya granted Maryam bail and adjourned the case to July 15 for further hearing.
