Borno State Police Command has aided a woman from Mallam Fatori in retrieving gold worth N23.6 million that she had buried while fleeing a Boko Haram attack in 2010.
The woman, who asked to remain anonymous for security reasons, had hidden her late mother’s gold coins and jewelry beneath the sand near her home before fleeing the town.

According to security analyst Zagazola, who shared the story on his X account on Monday, the woman returned to Mallam Fatori after many years and sought police assistance to locate the valuables. Using her memory of a tree stump and a corner of a collapsed house, officers carefully dug through the sand and debris and recovered 22 gold coins and ornaments, along with a gold bracelet and chain, now valued at over N23 million.
Witnesses said the woman broke down in tears upon receiving the gold, seeing it as more than money but as a connection to her past and her mother.
Borno State Police Commissioner, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, praised the Mallam Fatori Divisional Police Officer and his team for their honesty, professionalism, and dedication during the recovery. He noted that such acts reinforce public trust in law enforcement and provide hope to returnees rebuilding their lives after displacement.
