Maryam Sanda’s father-in-law, Alhaji Ahmed Bello Isa, has reacted to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to grant her a presidential pardon, describing it as an act of divine will and mercy.

Bello, who is the father of the late Bilyaminu Bello, said at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja that he welcomed the decision as an opportunity for Sanda to care for her two children, noting that the development aligns with his long-held decision to forgive her.

He explained that the release was a welcome development and a reflection of God’s will, adding that he harbored no resentment toward the Federal Government or Sanda’s family. Bello said he had earlier appealed for leniency by writing to relevant authorities, including the Attorney General of the Federation and the Commissioner of Police, seeking mercy for his daughter-in-law.

Maryam Sanda was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging in January 2020 for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, during a domestic dispute in November 2017. The case gained nationwide attention, sparking widespread discussions on domestic violence and justice in Nigeria.

Although some relatives of the late Bilyaminu have criticized Sanda’s release, calling it unfair, Bello maintained that his choice to forgive stands, emphasizing that his decision was guided by faith and compassion.
