The incident occurred on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Gwosa Market, located along Airport Road, when armed men in an ash-colored Toyota Corolla with concealed number plates ambushed Oyekunle.
While recounting the harrowing experience on Wednesday, Oyekunle revealed that the attackers demanded he “surrender himself,” suggesting the motive behind the attack was not robbery but an orchestrated plan to eliminate him.
According to him, one of the assailants aimed directly at his head and opened fire. In a desperate bid to save his life, Oyekunle charged at the gunman, knocked him down, and ran toward a crowd of fleeing traders for cover.
Despite sustaining injuries including a grazed bullet wound to the head and wounds on his legs—he managed to escape. He was initially taken to Sauka Divine Hospital and later transferred to the Nigerian Air Force Hospital for further treatment. He has since been discharged.
Oyekunle expressed gratitude to medical professionals and bystanders who came to his aid and called on the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and bring the culprits to justice.
The politician, who hails from Osun State, said the attack has only strengthened his resolve to serve the people of Irewole/Isokan/Ayedaade Federal Constituency.
