The duo was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on separate one-count charges bordering on tampering with the Nigerian currency, in violation of Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007.
According to the charges, G-Fresh was found guilty of spraying N14,000 in N1,000 denominations, while Hamisu Breaker was accused of tampering with N30,000 in N200 notes during social gatherings.
Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges when arraigned before Justice S.M. Shuaibu. Following their pleas, the judge convicted and sentenced each of them to five months imprisonment. However, the court gave them an option of a N200,000 fine.
The EFCC said the arrest and prosecution of the duo form part of its ongoing clampdown on individuals who abuse the Naira at social functions, in line with the CBN’s efforts to preserve the sanctity of the national currency.
