The attack happened on the Umuoji–Nkpor Road as the vehicles were returning from a mechanic workshop in Nkpor on Thursday. Ngige was not in the convoy at the time but later confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate and expressing confidence that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
Fred Chukwulobelu, Ngige’s former media aide, said the gunmen, dressed in police and military uniforms, shot a policeman in the pilot car and made away with his rifle and uniform. He also explained that a shop owner who attempted to record the incident was shot. The victim lost a significant amount of blood and is scheduled for surgery, but doctors expect a full recovery.
The pilot vehicle was heavily damaged, and the wounded escort team leader has undergone surgery and is expected to recover.
The Anambra State Police Command has launched a state-wide manhunt to track down those responsible for the attack.
