The Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Management Committee in Bauchi State sensitised members of Daben Kasuwa community in Ganjuwa Local Government Area on how power of silence triggers SGBV.
Mrs Bula Afsa, who led the committee on advocacy visit to the community, said they were in the community to draw people’s attention to the power of silence.
She said that domestic violence is prevalent in communities as the menace manifests in several forms, including physical assault, name calling and economic deprivation.
Afsa explained that keeping silent on any act of violence is dangerous to the community and the survivors.
She added that “the power of silence triggers, sustains and strengthens domestic violence, perpetrated by men and women toward one another.
“We have to take action to end all forms of violence against women, men, boys and girls for an inclusive society.
“There is a law that will deal with perpetrators.”
She stressed the need to create awareness and work with community members to break the silence on SGBV.
She urged the people to be in the lookout for violent tendencies and seek necessary help when needed.
She said “the aim for this sensitisation is to create awareness on GBV and find ways to curb the menace
because we noticed that issues of GBV are not reported for fear of victimisation.”
Malam Abubakar Mohammed, Community leader, appreciated the committee for educating the people
on the dangers of keeping silent on domestic violence.
The village head of Daben Kasuwa, Alhaji Sanusi Saleh, also thanked the committee for the sensitisation.
He said the sensitisation highlighted the need to engage communities to create awareness about issues of GBV.
