Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has revealed that his administration pardoned 4, 013 inmates across all Kano correctional facilities in eight years.

Similarly, he stated that his government has settled fines and compensation for inmates totaling N4. 4 million in the last eight years.

This was stated in a statement signed on Friday by Hassan Musa Fagge, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor of Kano State.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, stated this while pardoning 43 inmates serving jail terms for various offenses during the Eid-el-Fitr celebration at the Goron Dutse custodial facility.

While emphasizing the importance of freedom in human life, he urged the pardoned inmates to demonstrate good character wherever they find themselves in society.

Suleiman Inuwa, the state’s correctional service controller, explained that the Kano State Government’s gesture of releasing inmates on payment of fines, compensation, and pardon will help to decongest the facilities and ensure a peaceful atmosphere in the yard.

He urged other states to follow suit and urged the recipients to be good ambassadors of the Nigerian Correctional Service by being law-abiding citizens and exhibiting good behavior.

Abdullahi Rano, chairman of the council on the prerogative of mercy, thanked the governor for exercising the constitutionally mandated power to release inmates on the recommendation of correctional service management and the council.
