The governor made the appeal on Monday when the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, led a delegation to the Government House in Kano.
Governor Yusuf explained that his recent declaration of a state of emergency on education was aimed at overhauling the sector and creating room for meaningful reforms. He noted that collaboration with ABU would be vital in staff training, capacity building, and policy development.
He praised the university for its consistent record of academic excellence since its establishment in 1962 and urged the institution to consider expanding the admission quota for Kano indigenes. He also acknowledged the contributions of ABU alumni serving in his administration, describing them as valuable assets to the state.
In his remarks, Professor Ahmed said his visit was part of ongoing efforts to safeguard ABU’s landed properties in Kano and other parts of Nigeria. He also disclosed that the university would mark its 63rd anniversary on October 4, 2025, and reaffirmed ABU’s commitment to strengthening ties with regional partners.
Highlighting Kano’s economic importance in northern Nigeria, the Vice-Chancellor said the university was eager to establish a stronger presence in the state. He described Governor Yusuf as a humble leader and commended his achievements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Professor Ahmed also sympathised with the state government over a recent security incident near the Government House and expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Abduljabbar Umar Muhammad, for supporting ABU’s initiatives.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by senior officials including Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Bello Sabo; Registrar, Rabiu Samaila; Director of Legal Services, Professor Ishaq Abubakar; Director of Physical Planning and Municipal Services, Arc Suleiman Mohammed; and Director of Public Affairs, Auwalu Umar.
