Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has restated his administration’s commitment to upholding press freedom and empowering media professionals across the state.
This assurance was delivered by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Correspondents’ Chapel, Kano State chapter.

Addressing attendees, Waiya highlighted the state government’s readiness to roll out initiatives aimed at strengthening the capacity and professionalism of journalists.
“Very soon, the Ministry will unveil historic and transformative initiatives that will positively impact working journalists and uplift the practice of journalism in Kano State,” Waiya said.
He congratulated the new executive council, describing their election as a reflection of trust from their peers. He also commended the immediate past leadership for its commitment and service to the union.
The Commissioner praised the Correspondents’ Chapel for its important role in reporting on government activities and shaping public discourse in the state. He called on journalists to uphold the values of accuracy, fairness, and objectivity, especially in an era challenged by fake news and misinformation.
Waiya also acknowledged the cordial relationship between the Ministry and the Chapel and expressed hope that the new leadership would build on that foundation. He further thanked the national body of the NUJ for naming Governor Yusuf as the “Media Friendly Governor of the Year 2025” during the union’s 70th Anniversary Gala in Abuja.
“The national honour is a reflection of Governor Yusuf’s principled stance on press freedom, media independence, and transparent governance,” he added.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Murtala Adewale, promised to prioritize the welfare of members, foster unity, and strengthen partnerships for capacity development. He mentioned plans to collaborate with organizations such as NITDA, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Daily Trust Foundation to improve training opportunities for journalists.
Adewale also revealed intentions to upgrade the Chapel’s secretariat with modern facilities including internet access, a functional newsroom, and platforms for sustainable income generation such as media summits and journalism awards – all while maintaining editorial independence.
Representing the Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Suleiman Gusau, applauded the media for its role in promoting peace and security. He assured journalists of continued collaboration from the Police Command.
The inauguration event was attended by members of the media, government officials, civil society representatives, and security agencies.
