Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has launched a N2 billion redevelopment plan for the Farm Centre GSM Market, a major hub for phone and gadget traders in the state.

Governor Yusuf made the announcement during a visit to the market on Friday, following recent fire outbreaks that damaged parts of the facility.

According to his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, in a statement on Saturday, the project will involve rebuilding affected sections, expanding the market, and setting up a fire station to improve safety. Additional components include the installation of solar-powered streetlights, construction of a pedestrian bridge, upgraded drainage systems, and rehabilitation of nearby roads.

Governor Yusuf said the initiative is part of his vision to make the market an international centre for mobile trade and to boost regional commerce.

He also announced the introduction of a new management structure to ensure transparency, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.

While addressing traders, the governor urged them to work with security agencies to tackle phone snatching and petty crimes. He also restated his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through vocational training programs.

The Farm Centre GSM Market currently provides employment to over 39,000 youths. Market leaders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention to support economic recovery and infrastructure development in Kano
