Governor Yusuf explained that the council will collaborate with government institutions to address challenges such as drug abuse and thuggery among youths, while also guiding Friday Imams to deliver sermons that encourage peace and unity. He commended Islamic scholars for their continued dedication to promoting Islam in Kano and across Nigeria, stressing that their influence provides them with a unique ability to drive long-term positive change, unlike politicians whose impact is limited by tenure.
Highlighting the priorities of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-led government, Yusuf assured that his administration will not interfere in religious affairs. He also noted the declining influence of traditional rulers and religious leaders compared to the past, urging the council to revive that moral authority for the state’s progress.
The Shura Council comprises prominent Islamic scholars (Ulama), traditional leaders, and representatives of the business community. Its composition, according to the government, reflects inclusivity, with members drawn from different sects across the state.
In his acceptance remarks, Wazirin Kano, Sheikh Sa’ad Shehu, expressed gratitude for the appointment and prayed for divine wisdom to enable the council to fulfill its responsibilities effectively.
The Secretary of the council and Commissioner for Commerce, Investment and Industry, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, said the selection of members was strictly based on merit and free from political influence.
