Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has directed all Emirs across the state to uphold the annual Durbar festival as part of efforts to preserve and promote Kano’s centuries-old cultural heritage.
The directive was issued on Saturday during the opening ceremony of KANFEST (Kalankuwa) 2025, a festival designed to celebrate Kano’s cultural diversity, empower creatives, and strengthen global cultural partnerships.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Emirates in sustaining the Durbar tradition, describing it as a vital symbol of Kano’s identity and pride.
He further assured that the state government would continue investing in arts, culture, and tourism, emphasizing their importance as tools for social cohesion, youth engagement, and economic diversification.
In his remarks, the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the State Council of Emirates, Dr. Muhammadu Sanusi II, commended the governor’s vision and praised the government for reviving and preserving the cherished traditions of the Kano people.
The three-day event features cultural exhibitions, traditional cuisines, crafts, performances, local games, and paper presentations from scholars and artists. It also attracted traditional titleholders, members of the diplomatic corps, artisans, investors, and other stakeholders in the culture and tourism sector.
