Tensions are mounting in Kano’s political sphere as Governor Abba Yusuf’s estrangement from his mentor and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) godfather, Rabiu Kwankwaso, becomes increasingly evident.

While Governor Yusuf attended Kwankwaso’s birthday celebration on October 21, sources confirm that he has largely avoided direct communication with his former mentor, leading to widespread speculation about his intentions and ambitions.

Reports indicate that the rift stems from Governor Yusuf’s frustration with Kwankwaso’s perceived overreach in party and government affairs. Sources close to the matter allege that Kwankwaso has exercised significant control over local government decisions, including the appointment of local government chairmen, which has fueled the governor’s desire for autonomy.

An insider disclosed that “Ninety per cent of the commissioners were imposed by Kwankwaso,” highlighting the governor’s dissatisfaction. “Abba does not want to denigrate Kwankwaso, but he truly wants to be independent,” the source explained.

Despite attempts to reconcile, it is reported that the two leaders have not communicated directly in months. Governor Yusuf has notably missed several key meetings convened by Kwankwaso in Kano and Abuja. “He kept Kwankwaso waiting through midnight and refused to come,” another insider revealed, underscoring the strain in their relationship.

In response to the growing distance, Kwankwaso has reportedly relied on intermediaries to relay directives, including a controversial call for the removal of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). However, this directive was allegedly ignored by Governor Yusuf, prompting NNPP Chairman Hashimu Dungurawa to announce the SSG’s dismissal due to alleged anti-party activities.

The political fallout from this escalating feud poses a serious challenge for the NNPP in Kano. Speculation abounds regarding potential defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), with some party figures-possibly lawmakers and commissioners—expressing alignment with Governor Yusuf’s stance.

As this internal conflict continues to unravel, the future of the NNPP in Kano remains precarious, with both Yusuf and Kwankwaso facing increasing pressure from their respective factions within the party.
