The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has released a list of individuals whose land allocations have been revoked.

Notable among those affected are Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri, Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, and the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

These high-profile figures are among 568 landowners in Maitama II, Cadastral Zone A10, Abuja, whose land allocations have been withdrawn.

According to the Minister’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, the revocation followed the expiration of an extended two-week grace period for the payment of Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) fees.

Background Information

The revocation is part of Nyesom Wike’s ongoing efforts to sanitize land administration in Abuja and recover government lands left undeveloped or misused. Upon assuming office, Wike vowed to address irregularities in the allocation and usage of land in the FCT, emphasizing that many plots were allocated but remained undeveloped for years.

Sources indicate that the government issued notices to property owners with pending obligations, particularly unpaid C-of-O fees, giving them a two-week grace period. Failure to comply with these directives led to the mass revocation.

Wike has also stated that the revocation aims to free up land for serious investors who are ready to develop the plots in line with the Abuja Master Plan. He has criticized past administrations for tolerating land speculation and warned that the FCT Administration would no longer condone land hoarding.

This move has sparked mixed reactions. While some commend the minister for enforcing compliance and promoting development, others argue that the policy disproportionately affects political figures and raises concerns about selective enforcement.
