In a separate statement, the Presidency also confirmed the development through the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Following the announcement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu contacted the late president’s widow, Mrs Aishat Buhari, to express his condolences. He also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the former president’s remains back to Nigeria.

As a mark of honour, President Tinubu has ordered all national flags to fly at half-mast across the country.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, after previously ruling as military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985. He was widely known for his strong anti-corruption campaign and efforts to reposition Nigeria’s economy.

The family is expected to release details of the funeral arrangements, which will be conducted in line with Islamic rites.
