A Kano State High Court has sentenced a football coach, Hayatu Muhammad, to eight years in prison for sexually assaulting one of his underage players.

Justice Musa Dahuru Muhammad, who presided over the case, found the coach guilty of committing the offense on two different occasions.

During the trial, the prosecution presented five witnesses whose testimonies convinced the court of the coach’s culpability. Despite his plea of not guilty, the judge ruled that the prosecution had successfully established the case beyond reasonable doubt, in line with Section 284 of the Penal Code Law.

In his ruling, Justice Muhammad sentenced the coach to four years’ imprisonment on each count, with both sentences to run concurrently from the date of judgment.

The court described the act as a grave violation of trust and a crime against the dignity of minors, stressing that the punishment should serve as a deterrent to others who prey on vulnerable individuals.
