The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flood alert following its forecast of heavy and above-average rainfall in Kano and nine other northern states as the country approaches the peak of the rainy season.

According to NiMet’s August weather outlook released in Gombe on Tuesday by the agency’s Meteorological Manager, Gayus Musa, states expected to be most affected include Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Jigawa, Katsina, Yobe, Borno, and Kebbi.

The agency warned that the expected intense rainfall may lead to increased soil moisture, rising river levels, and a higher risk of both flash and riverine flooding, especially in the extreme northern parts of the country.

NiMet urged residents in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant, comply with evacuation instructions, and store important documents and valuables in waterproof containers. Emergency response agencies were also advised to stay up to date with weather forecasts and take proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.

Beyond flood concerns, NiMet also forecast lower-than-usual nighttime and early morning temperatures in August, which could pose health risks to vulnerable populations. Parents were advised to ensure infants and children are kept warm and nourished to reduce the likelihood of seasonal illnesses.

While the north braces for increased rainfall, the agency predicts below-average rainfall in parts of Taraba, southern Adamawa, and the Federal Capital Territory. The Southwest is also expected to experience a short dry spell in early August, with rainfall likely to resume later in the month.

NiMet called on community leaders to activate local flood response plans and raise public awareness on flood safety, hygiene, and health practices to reduce the impact of the predicted weather conditions.
