The Federal Government has announced a new housing initiative aimed at constructing bamboo houses for low- and medium-income earners across the country.

This move, according to the government, is part of efforts to address the growing housing deficit in Nigeria while embracing sustainable and climate-friendly building practices.
Speaking during a workshop on bamboo-based climate-smart housing construction in Abuja, Esuabana Asanye, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, said the use of bamboo will make housing more affordable, comfortable, and environmentally friendly.
Asanye highlighted bamboo’s versatility, noting that it has long been used in construction, paper production, and traditional medicine. She described the plant as a reliable and sustainable alternative to conventional building materials.
The Permanent Secretary also commended the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) for its role in promoting innovative solutions to climate-related challenges through research and development.
“This initiative clearly shows our commitment to leveraging local materials and science-based innovations to solve pressing national issues, especially in housing,” she added.
The government says it hopes the bamboo housing plan will not only reduce environmental impact but also create job opportunities through increased demand for bamboo cultivation and processing.
