The Federal Government has responded to recent comments from the United States concerning religious freedom in Nigeria, emphasizing that the country remains resolute in protecting the rights of all citizens and will not be swayed by external misunderstandings of its internal affairs.

In a statement issued Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria highlighted its long-standing tradition of religious tolerance and social inclusion. The government also pointed to ongoing efforts to tackle violent extremism, which it described as being fueled by certain interests operating across West Africa and the Sahel region.

The ministry reiterated its resolve to confront extremist threats, noting that such influences have destabilized several neighboring countries and contributed to societal divisions.

The statement, signed by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, described Nigeria as a “faith-oriented and inclusive nation” that values religious diversity and national unity, rather than allowing belief systems to be politicized.

It further stated that, like the United States, Nigeria views diversity as a key national strength. The country, the ministry said, upholds faith, tolerance, and inclusion while remaining aligned with internationally accepted standards.

While reaffirming Washington as a close partner, the statement cautioned against narratives that might undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty or ongoing anti-extremism efforts. It emphasized that the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to collaborating with all partners dedicated to genuine peace, stability, and democratic principles.

The statement also paid tribute to victims of terrorism and commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sacrifices, describing the nation’s enemies as both ruthless and cowardly. It concluded by asserting that the government will continue to safeguard all citizens, regardless of their religion, race, or creed.
