The Federal Government has disbursed N2.3 billion to federal universities for the payment of outstanding arrears owed to academic and non-academic staff.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the development on Wednesday while updating journalists on the government’s ongoing engagements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other tertiary institution unions.

Alausa explained that the funds were processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to support staff welfare and resolve pending financial obligations. He reiterated that the move reflects the government’s renewed commitment to improving the tertiary education sector through consistent funding, policy reforms, and sustained dialogue with university stakeholders.

He further revealed that plans are underway to integrate the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) into the salaries of university staff beginning in 2026. According to him, the measure will ensure timely and sustainable payment of allowances in the future.

The Minister added that the government is also concluding arrangements for the release of third-party non-statutory deductions and pension remittances to the appropriate unions.
