The programme was officially launched at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Dala on Friday, making it the first accredited facility for NEMSAS in the state. According to officials, the initiative aims to deliver free medical care to vulnerable individuals during the first 48 hours of emergencies.
Designed to improve access to life-saving treatment, NEMSAS focuses on patients suffering from critical conditions such as road traffic accidents, obstetric complications, gunshot injuries, and snake bites. It is expected that additional state hospitals will be enrolled in the scheme soon.
Funded through a statutory allocation from the Basic Health Care Provision Fund specifically the 5% earmarked for emergency medical treatment the programme includes a fleet of ambulances equipped with medical tools and trained personnel. These ambulances will respond to emergencies, stabilise patients, and ensure timely transport to health facilities.
The launch aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda for Health and forms part of the broader National Health Sector Renewal and Investment Initiative.
Officials say the project will soon be expanded across more hospitals in Kano, potentially serving as a nationwide model for emergency healthcare delivery.
