The warning was released on Sunday through the National Flood Early Warning (FEW) Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment. In a circular signed by Malam Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the ministry highlighted that states including Adamawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, and Kebbi are at particularly high risk.
Other states on alert include Kano, Niger, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Kwara. Several towns within these states such as Jimeta, Mubi, Keffi, Kafanchan, Birnin Kebbi, Minna, Gusau, and Sokoto are especially vulnerable to severe flooding. Kebbi State, in particular, has multiple towns on the watchlist including Kamba, Kangiwa, Kalgo, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, Gwandu, Jega, and Birnin Kebbi.
Malam Bokani appealed to residents, local governments, and relevant agencies to take proactive measures in safeguarding lives and properties. He also called on stakeholders to provide timely updates to facilitate rapid responses when flood incidents occur.
This alert follows an earlier warning issued last month covering 11 states, emphasizing the ongoing need for vigilance and preparedness across the northern region.
