A lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic, Aliyu Hamza Abdullahi, was reportedly attacked in his office on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
The incident was first reported by Sahara Reporters and allegedly involved a female student and her boyfriend.
According to the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Ismail Bagwai, the attack occurred around 2 p.m. while Abdullahi, who also serves as the department’s examination officer, was attending to students.

The unnamed female student allegedly blamed the lecturer for obstructing her academic progress after she was denied a transfer to another department due to inadequate grades. In retaliation, she reportedly brought her boyfriend to confront the lecturer.
The situation escalated when the boyfriend allegedly pulled out a cutlass and attempted to strike Abdullahi, aiming for his head.
However, nearby students and staff intervened, preventing a potentially fatal attack.
Bagwai explained, “The lecturer sustained injuries to his hands while trying to defend himself. Other students in the office intervened, forcing the attackers to flee.”
The lecturer is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. Efforts by the institution’s security personnel to apprehend the suspects in the Dorayi area of Kano were reportedly met with resistance from local thugs.
Bagwai confirmed that the student and her boyfriend remain at large but assured that security agencies are actively investigating the incident and that the attackers will not evade justice.
