Mr. Usman Baba the inspector General of police, has approved a new dress code for women police officers in Nigeria.

The call was made by the Acting Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi  in a statement on Friday.

Adejobi disclosed that the dress code was revealed on thursday during the IGP’s meeting with strategic police managers.

He announced that the “new and improved” dress code would allow the female officers to wear stud earrings.

Adejobi further stated that the female police officers would be allowed to wear their uniforms with headscarves under their berets.

“The police have workforce from every local government in the country with different ethnic and religious backgrounds”.

“Therefore, this brings the need to guarantee inclusion, gender mainstreaming, ethnic and religious diversity in the workforce for optimum output and professionalism for effective diversity management”.

He added that the dress code is optional but senior police officers should ensure compliance.

“This development was in line with international best practices, to address the growing concern for gender mainstreaming and respect for culture”.

“other countries that have adopted same dress code include Canada, United State of America, Sweden, Turkey, Australia and the United kingdom”.
