The Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, has directed the Inspector General of Police to arrest former INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, for contempt of court.

The order came just hours after Yakubu stepped down as INEC Chairman, following a suit filed by the Action Alliance.

The political party had accused Yakubu and INEC of failing to comply with a previous court judgment that instructed the electoral body to upload the names of its National Chairman, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, and other National Executive Committee members to the INEC portal.

The judgment had affirmed the validity of the Action Alliance’s elective convention held on October 7, 2023, which saw Omoaje emerge as the party’s National Chairman. While INEC said it had partially complied by uploading the names of state chairmen and other NEC members, Omoaje’s name was reportedly left out.

The court ordered the Inspector General of Police to ensure Yakubu’s arrest and committal proceedings within seven days. In addition, the court imposed a cost of N100,000 against the judgment creditors.
