The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a crackdown on vehicles with tinted windows and covered number plates as part of efforts to combat rising criminal activities, including kidnapping.
In a statement on X, the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, directed vehicle owners to remove tinted windows or face vehicle impoundment.

“For now, the use of tinted glasses on vehicles is prohibited. If your vehicle has tinted glasses, kindly remove them to avoid having your vehicle impounded by the police,” Adeh stated.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, reinforced this directive during a parade of suspects on Tuesday. He noted that many rescued kidnapping victims had identified tinted windows as a factor preventing others from recognizing their distress. Criminals also exploit covered or missing number plates to evade detection.
“We are clamping down on all commercial vehicles and private cars with tinted windows. We need to see occupants of vehicles. Tinted glass is contributing to lawlessness,” Disu said. He added, “The enforcement of the ban on tinted windows, covered plates, and unregistered vehicles will be carried out vigorously.”
The CP warned residents to comply with the rules, emphasizing that unregistered vehicles, covered plates, and tinted windows are used by criminals to target innocent citizens.
According to reports, the police have already impounded 296 vehicles in the FCT following the implementation of the directive.
