A popular actress, Fatima Nayo aka Kyauta Dillaliya, who claims to be the only female disk jokey (DJ) in Kano has welcomed the decision of the Kano State Hisbah Board ban male colleagues from performing at female-dominated events.
Daily News 24 had exclusively reported that the Hisbah Commander-General (CG), Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa had on Tuesday announced the ban of male DJs from male events.
Sheikh Daurawa had cited the indiscriminate mixing of males and females during events, a practice he said, was contributing to the spread of immorality in the society.
The report has generated different reactions from members of the public on social media.
But in an exclusive interview with a Daily News 24 correspondent, Usman Muhammad Opera, Ms Fatima, said the Hisbah has taken the right step by encouraging women to take control of their own ceremonies.
She added that the Hisbah’s policy is in line with Islamic tradition, which she said allows women to celebrate events with music as long as the events is women only.

“I have been a DJ for a long time and we don’t include men in our activities. The only thing we ask men to do is to load and unload our equipment from a vehicle.
“But we make our own music and preside over our ceremonies without any male involvement,” she said.
According to Ms Fatima, she was inspired to become a DJ after listening to preaching by Islamic scholars who encourage women to celebrate events among themselves and even sing or dance.
“It is wrong for men to be roaming in the gathering of women in the name of DJs, picking money from the ground in the midst of women. This is un-Islamic,” she said.
However, Ms Fatima explained she has not found any other female DJ in Kano, saying that the business has been dominated by men.
“I can say I am the only female DJ in Kano since I have not found any other woman doing this business. So, we don’t have any group of female DJs. This is because in Nigeria, it not in our tradition for women to become DJs.
“But in countries like Saudi Arabia, who have strict gender segregation policies, only females can officiate at female events,” she explained.
