Two residential buildings were completely destroyed in a fire outbreak in Chiranchi Gabas, Dorayi Karama, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, resulting in massive property losses estimated at N15 million.
Daily News 24 reports that the incident occurred on Monday, 20 October 2025, around 10 a.m. Aminu Hamisu, a resident of one of the affected buildings, said the fire started while he was at home charging solar-powered batteries used to run a shop selling fura da nono (millet and milk drink). After about an hour, his wife alerted him to a burning smell. Despite his efforts to disconnect the batteries, the fire quickly spread, with smaller batteries exploding one after another.

Neighbours struggled to contain the fire due to a lack of water, and by the time the Federal Fire Service arrived, much of the property had already been destroyed. The firefighters finally extinguished the remaining flames and smoke.

Aminu Hamisu disclosed that no lives were lost, but everything in his house, including new clothes, chairs, bedsheets, mattresses, and other belongings, was destroyed. He estimated the total value of the lost property at over N7 million. “Even the sister of my wife lost her items prepared for marriage,” he said. “Nobody will understand until they see it with their own eyes,” he added, appealing for state government assistance.
Abdullahi Hamisu, Aminu’s brother, said the building sustained severe structural damage. “The house must be rebuilt. Since we have no help, we are trying to support the damaged parts with pillars, but we cannot fully manage it,” he said.
Zara’u Abdullahi Na’allah, Aminu’s wife, urged the state government, agencies, and NGOs to intervene. “Everything has burnt. The children only have their school uniforms, and my husband and I are left with only the clothes we ran out of the house with. All our other belongings have been destroyed. We need urgent help,” she said.
The Kano State Controller of the Federal Fire Service, Engr. Kazeem Sholadoye Oyefola, confirmed the fire affected two residential buildings and commended the rapid intervention of his team. He estimated the total property loss at N15 million and advised residents to adopt preventive safety measures, especially as the harmattan season approaches.
