Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed all Nigerian employees with immediate effect, following what management described as a “total re-organisation” of the facility.

The decision, which surfaced less than a day after 90 percent of the workforce joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), was revealed on Wednesday through a post by political commentator Imran Wakili on X.
In a memo signed by Femi Adekunle, Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, the refinery’s leadership said the action was triggered by alleged sabotage in different units of the plant.
The directive stated that affected employees must hand over all company property and secure exit clearance without delay. It further noted that the finance department had been instructed to process benefits and entitlements in line with contract terms. Management also conveyed appreciation to the disengaged staff for their service.
The mass termination is the latest twist in the refinery’s long-running dispute with oil and gas unions. While Dangote Refinery had earlier reached a deal with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) recognizing the right of workers to organize, tensions have resurfaced following the employees’ move to align with PENGASSAN.
