The Court of Appeal in Abuja has scheduled Thursday, October 17, for the hearing of appeals concerning the ongoing emirship dispute in Kano State.
A three-member panel of justices, led by Justice Mohammed Mustapha, reserved judgment on Monday after lawyers in the case adopted their legal processes.

The appeals include those filed by Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero against the Attorney General of Kano State and 10 others (CA/KN/166/M/2014) and another appeal concerning the appointment of the emir, between the Kano State House of Assembly and Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, among others (CA/KN/126/M/2024).
Additionally, there is a motion to stay the execution of the Federal High Court’s ruling of July 25 regarding the enforcement of fundamental rights.
Previously, the Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice Abdullahi Liman, had nullified Governor Abba Yusuf’s decision to depose Emir Ado Bayero and appoint Muhammadu Sanusi II on May 23. The court declared the Kano Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill, 2024, passed by the Kano State House of Assembly, as “null and void,” effectively restoring Bayero’s seat.
Justice Liman ruled that the government’s actions “violate the order of this court earlier stated,” noting that “the balance of convenience is on the applicant herein (Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi).”
Meanwhile, a separate Kano State High Court had barred Ado Bayero from presenting himself as the emir.
Speaking after the case was mentioned, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Adegboyega Awomolo expressed confidence that both sides are prepared for the hearing.
