Last week, social media platforms across Northern Nigeria and beyond were abuzz with intense debates surrounding the popular program ‘Mata A Yau’, airing on Arewa24 TV.
Daily News 24 reports that one of the presenters of the show, Aisha Umar Jajere, sparked controversy with a controversial statement concerning the issue of greetings between husbands and wives.
The brief video clip, shared on the ‘Mata A Yau’ Facebook page, depicted a woman suggesting that if a wife fails to initiate a greeting, it should be the husband’s responsibility to greet her, which ignited a fervent discussion.
Numerous scholars within and beyond the city of Kano passionately responded to this statement, as well as other content presented during the programme. Utilising social media platforms, particularly Facebook, individuals criticised the program’s presenters, fearing that such discussions could potentially create conflicts among couples.
Following the significant backlash received from various quarters, the presenters of the Mata A Yau’ programme sought a meeting with Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, the commander of the Kano State Hisbah Commission. During the discussion, they acknowledged their mistake, clarified that their intentions were not accurately conveyed, and expressed concern about how their statements were perceived.
Sheikh Adam Abdallah Adam, a renowned Islamic teacher, elaborated on this matter in a short video posted by @A_Y_Rafindadi on the X channel.
Sheikh Adam emphasized the importance of patience for the offended members of the Muslim community who were affected by the program’s comments.
