CITAD calls for action on gender based violence

The Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has held its monthly press conference on gender based violence.

Daily News 24 reports that CITAD tracked their monthly progress on gender based violence (GBV) and marked it a positive outcome.

Zainab Aminu the gender base officer at CITAD said gender based violence still persist despite that the cases are under reported.

She appealed to the government to adopt laws that would protect women and girls, referral centers and forensic centres for victims.

In comparison to January’s report, CITAD reported decrease in rape cases, sexual harassment and wife bartering while there were no reports on cases like social media harassment sexual blackmail, with an increase in sexual abuse.

She further urges victims and parents to report cases that deals with gender based violence through their gender Based violence (GBV) application which is available to both Android and IOS users because keeping quiet only encourages perpetrators.

“While we continue to monitor, we would like to appeal to parents, relatives and others to always reports cases to the various bodies either directly to us or to other sisters NGO’s and as well as other government agencies such as the National Human Rights Commission, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Hisbah and others.”

Zainab Aminu appreciates the efforts of traditional leaders, religious clerics and relevant stakeholders for intensifying their efforts to prevent gender based violence in the society.

She disclosed that a lot of sensitization and awareness program is ongoing to educate those at grassroots levels.

“We cannot reach everybody at a time, its an ongoing process and we believed with time we would get to some places that are even unreachable, but so far all rural areas have a representatives from CITAD to educate people.”
