A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development, has embarked on community policy consultation engagement on ways to tackle insecurity in Nigeria.
One of its leaders, Amb. Aminu Wali, a former minister of foreign affairs said during a meeting of the centre on Wednesday in Kano, that their target was to work with all stakeholders to tackle the worrisome issue of insecurity in the country.
“Addressing the issue of insecurity has become mandatory out of the numerous problems bedevilling the development of the country.
“The greatest challenge the country is facing in recent times is insecurity, hence it is very pertinent for stakeholders to join hands together in ensuring the peace and security of the nation.
“What we are doing is non-political, we are trying to help and contribute to any government both at federal and state levels aimed at moving the nation forward’’, he said.
Wali added that the centre would explore all the necessary avenues in ensuring peace and security in the country.
Earlier, the Executive Director of the centre, Amb. Sani Bala said the meeting was to fine-tune modalities of addressing the challenges of insecurity as well as promoting peace in the country.
According to him, six states in the northern part of the country including Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Plateau and Kogi were engaged by the centre for such consultation.
The Director, Centre for Gender Studies, Department of Sociology, Kaduna State University, Prof. Hauwa’u Evelyn urged policy makers to know the needs of communities before embarking on any project.
She called for consistent investigation and evidence gathering to ensure sustainable peace and security in the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that during the meeting, the first volume of Community Engagement Policy Outcome Document was unveiled.
The meeting was attended by traditional leaders, the academia and other stakeholders. (NAN)
