Aisha Buhari, wife of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has disclosed that her husband once withdrew into isolation after believing rumours within the Presidential Villa that she had plotted to kill him.

In the newly released biography From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha Buhari revealed that the former president began locking himself in a room after accepting the claims, which were allegedly circulated by individuals around the seat of power. She described the period as emotionally difficult, noting that the rumours had a profound effect on Buhari’s state of mind.

Aisha Buhari also addressed long-standing speculations surrounding the illness that kept Buhari away from office for 154 days in 2017. She clarified that the health challenge was neither linked to poisoning nor any terminal condition, explaining that it stemmed from complications caused by changes in his diet and poor nutritional management.

She said the illness started after the feeding system and breakfast routine she had personally overseen since their time in Kaduna were altered following his assumption of office as president. According to her, the dietary changes affected his health and eventually led to the prolonged medical leave.

Her account is documented in the 600-page biography written by Dr Charles Omole and launched on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The 22-chapter book traces Buhari’s life journey from his childhood in Daura, Katsina State, through his military and political career, to his death at a London hospital in mid-July 2025.
