16 worshippers in Niger killed by suspected bandits

Suspected bandits have reportedly killed sixteen people who were performing their morning prayers,  according to eyewitnesses. 

The incident happened in a mosque in Ba’are village in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State. Bandits stormed the village on motorcycles and headed for the mosque where they killed and injured the worshippers.

Ten others who were injured are currently receiving treatment in the Kontagora General Hospital.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Monday Bala Kuryas, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, however, put the casualty figures at nine.

The Police boss emphasized that “only nine persons were killed by the suspected bandits while several others narrowly escaped being killed by the hoodlums but sustained varying degrees of injuries from their assailants.” (Tribune)
