Witnesses said the children had unearthed the device from the ground and brought it home, mistaking it for scrap metal they could sell.
Borno State Police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed that the explosion happened around 5 p.m. on Sunday. He explained that one child died instantly when the bomb went off, while six others were injured.
The injured children were immediately taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where they are receiving medical care.
Daso added that the police are stepping up awareness campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of collecting scrap metal. Similar accidents have previously occurred in Konduga, Dikwa, Monguno, and Jere, despite the state’s ban on scrap metal collection.
