The hunters, who were reportedly on a rescue mission, came under attack after running out of ammunition. They were drawn from Hawul and Biu local government areas in Borno State, as well as Garkida in Adamawa. One hunter who survived the attack is currently receiving medical treatment for severe injuries.
Shawulu Yohanna, Chairman of the Hunters and Vigilantes Association of Nigeria, North East chapter, confirmed the incident and condemned the attack. He called on the federal government to urgently equip his members with modern and sophisticated weapons to counter the terrorists more effectively.
Yohanna also commended Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for his efforts to secure communities but warned of the increasing activities of terrorists regrouping and launching fresh attacks across Southern Borno and other parts of the region.
Reacting to the incident, Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, sympathised with the families of the slain hunters and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
He hailed the courage of Yohanna and his men in defending their communities and urged the federal government to provide advanced equipment, technology, and adequate support for security forces on the front lines.
The tragedy in Kopire village follows another deadly attack in Kopl village, Chibok Local Government Area, where 14 mourners were gunned down during funeral prayers.
