During the distribution ceremony which happened on Wednesday, Vice-Chancellor Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, assisted by the Chairman of the Bicycle Loan Committee, Professor Mahmoud Umar Sani, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to staff welfare. He emphasized that the initiative provides an affordable and sustainable mobility option for staff, enhancing their efficiency at work.

Professor Abbas commended the beneficiaries of the first batch for fulfilling their loan repayments and announced that deductions for the newly allocated bicycles would commence after the Sallah festival. He explained that this would allow staff to utilize their salaries for Ramadhan fasting and Eid celebrations before loan repayments begin.

Beneficiaries expressed their appreciation to the university management, describing the initiative as timely, especially amid rising transportation costs. Many pledged to make good use of the bicycles.

A total of 47 bicycles were distributed in this phase, following the 100 bicycles given out in the first phase.

The initiative comes at a time when university workers in Nigeria continue to grapple with poor wages and inadequate funding of tertiary institutions. Many academic and non-academic staff have repeatedly called for improved remuneration and better working conditions to enhance productivity and the quality of education.
