Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, has died after collapsing in his office in Yenagoa on Thursday.

Reports indicate that he was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where doctors confirmed his death. Ewhrudjakpo was 60 and hailed from Ofoni community in Sagbama Local Government Area.

The Bayelsa State Government has yet to issue an official statement, and government officials have so far declined to comment on the incident.

Meanwhile, the PDP described his passing as a major loss, praising him as a “truthful and dedicated political figure” who served the party with commitment.

A lawyer and former Commissioner for Works, Ewhrudjakpo played a central role in major state projects, including the construction of the Bayelsa Airport. He also represented Bayelsa West in the Senate before becoming deputy governor in 2020.

Before his death, he had faced political pressure following Governor Douye Diri’s defection to the APC, which fuelled threats of impeachment, though he remained in the PDP.

There have also been indications that he was being considered for the 2027 governorship race, with backing reportedly coming from former Governor Seriake Dickson.
