Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Lawal said the visit lacked tangible benefits for Nigeria and appeared to be arranged by lobbyists seeking to bolster Tinubu’s public perception. He also questioned the sensitivity of the trip, noting that Tinubu’s participation in a high-profile Catholic event might further alienate Nigeria’s Christian community, especially considering the controversy around the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the president and his vice.
Lawal also addressed ongoing political efforts aimed at forming a strong opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to him, the coalition being considered will not involve the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he described as being infected by an “incurable virus.” He argued that the internal crisis within the PDP renders it an unreliable vehicle for any serious political alliance.
He disclosed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is among those leading consultations for a new platform that would serve as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Lawal said discussions are at an advanced stage and that the group will soon unveil the new political structure meant to challenge the current administration.
