Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prove its commitment to delivering credible elections as the country moves toward the 2027 polls.

In a statement shared on his X handle on Friday, Atiku said Nigerians expect INEC to work hand in hand with the National Assembly to strengthen the electoral framework and guarantee transparency.
His comments followed a meeting with a European Union delegation led by Barry Andrews, a member of the European Parliament and head of the 2023 EU Election Observation Mission to Nigeria. The team, which also included EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot, met with Atiku to review recommendations made after the 2023 elections and assess progress on electoral reforms.
Atiku expressed concern that despite growing demands for change, the electoral body has yet to show the level of commitment needed to inspire confidence ahead of 2027. He stressed that credible polls are essential for safeguarding democracy, uniting the country, and driving economic development.
He further pledged to support civil society organizations and election observers working to promote accountability and genuine reforms, noting that collaboration between local institutions and international partners remains vital in building trust in the process.
The EU delegation’s engagement, he added, reflects the importance of international cooperation in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and preventing a repeat of the shortcomings witnessed in past elections.
