Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially resigned his membership from the party as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, located in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The development was made public on Wednesday through a post by his media aide, Abdul Rasheeth, on the social media platform X.
Atiku cited the internal crises within the PDP as a major reason for his exit, stating that the party had strayed from its founding principles. He also noted that the increasing divisions within the party had made it difficult to maintain a unified front ahead of future elections.
Having served two terms as Nigeria’s Vice President and contested for the presidency under the PDP on two occasions, Atiku described his departure as a difficult but necessary decision in light of recent developments.
The former Vice President also confirmed his involvement in the formation of a new political movement known as the Alliance Democratic Congress, which is expected to serve as a coalition platform ahead of the 2027 polls.
His resignation contradicts an earlier statement by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, who had dismissed reports of Atiku’s defection as false and politically motivated. Ibe had maintained that the former PDP leader was still committed to the party’s ideals.
