His emergence followed a keenly contested election held during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress at the University of Benin, Edo State, which ran from May 8 to 12.

Before his elevation to the top office, Piwuna served as ASUU’s National Vice President. He defeated Professor Adamu Babayo of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, to succeed Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who had led the union since May 2021. Though ASUU is yet to release an official statement, insiders confirm that the transition has already taken place.

Piwuna, a former Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, is widely regarded among his peers as a disciplined and visionary leader. He holds an MBBS from the University of Jos and a Master’s degree from the University of Malta.

A fellow of the West African College of Physicians and a member of the International Psychogeriatric Association, he is expected to bring depth and dynamism to the union’s leadership.
