The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Bayero University, Kano, has awarded scholarships worth N100,000 each to 18 students who have demonstrated academic excellence despite financial challenges.

The gesture was disclosed on Tuesday during a ceremony held at the university. According to the Chairperson of ASUU-BUK, Dr. Ibrahim Tajo-Siraj, the initiative is part of the union’s commitment to inclusive education, ensuring that economic hardship does not prevent promising students from reaching their academic goals.

The support is directed at students who perform well academically but lack the financial means to sustain their education. The union believes that no student should be denied the opportunity to learn due to economic circumstances.

Dr. Tajo-Siraj explained that the scholarship is funded through voluntary monthly salary deductions by ASUU members, reflecting their collective resolve to uplift less privileged students. He also noted that while the union’s national secretariat offers N200,000 scholarships to two students per branch annually, the BUK chapter extended its impact by adding 16 more beneficiaries at N100,000 each.

He added that the scholarship scheme has been running for over ten years at Bayero University, with many former recipients now contributing meaningfully to society.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Sagir Abbas, commended the union’s continuous efforts in supporting students. He encouraged ASUU to maintain close collaboration with the university management for better visibility and recognition of the initiative.

Also speaking at the event, Professor Muhammad Waziri, who chaired the scholarship committee, said the selection process was highly competitive, with over 100 applications received this year. He expressed optimism that more students would benefit from the scheme in the coming years.

One of the recipients, Muhammad Adamu, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed deep appreciation to ASUU for the timely assistance and prayed for the union’s continued strength and success.
